London Film Festival Director Highlights Persistent Gender Gap for Female Filmmakers

Kristy Matheson, director of the London Film Festival (LFF), has voiced concerns that female filmmakers continue to face significant barriers in advancing their careers beyond their initial projects. Despite a notable presence of female-made films in the festival's overall program, Matheson observed that the progress in this area has stagnated, indicating a persistent issue within the industry.

While 43% of the 251 films selected for this year's LFF are made by women, a stark contrast emerges when examining the gala presentations. Only two out of the 21 gala films are directed by women, underscoring the continued underrepresentation of female directors at the highest profile level of the festival. Matheson's remarks highlight the ongoing struggle for gender parity in filmmaking, particularly for women seeking to sustain and grow their careers.
