Film Festivals Showcase Diverse Global Cinema and LGBTQ+ Voices

The San Sebastián Film Festival is highlighting international cinema with the world premiere of Kazakhstan's "Mugalim" in its New Directors section. Directed by Ayana Nurdinova, the film follows a music teacher's aspirations. Meanwhile, Portugal's Queer Lisboa festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary with a broad spectrum of LGBTQ+ films, including both contemporary works and radical 1970s counterculture cinema.

The Camden International Film Festival in Maine is also underway, focusing exclusively on documentary features. This year's festival has already premiered several nonfiction films, with more scheduled, including "Argonauts at the End of History" and "No Money No Honey." The San Sebastián festival's director, José Luis Rebordinos, is notably concluding his tenure by taking a political stance on the Israel-Gaza war, a move that sets it apart among major film festivals.
