Indonesia Earthquake Claims Dozens of Lives, Rescue Efforts Underway

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck eastern Indonesia early Saturday, resulting in at least 47 fatalities and widespread destruction. The seismic event, one of the strongest to hit the region in decades, caused buildings and homes to collapse, particularly in the Flores region. Thousands of residents sought higher ground due to initial fears of a tsunami, though the warning was later lifted.

Search and rescue operations are currently underway to find survivors, but efforts are being hampered by landslides that have blocked roads and disrupted communication lines, especially in Nagekeo, the area closest to the earthquake's epicenter. The region is known for its seismic activity, and the earthquake was followed by numerous aftershocks, including one measuring 6.1 magnitude.
