Oakland Police Oversight Ends; Florida Executes 16th Prisoner; Pastor Convicted of Wife's Murder

After 23 years, a federal judge has terminated oversight of the Oakland Police Department, concluding the longest such arrangement in U.S. history. The oversight was initiated in the early 2000s following exposure of misconduct by officers known as the "riders," who engaged in actions such as planting evidence, falsifying reports, and using excessive force, primarily against young Black men. This led to over 100 civil lawsuits and a court-ordered reform program.

In other criminal justice developments, Florida executed Curtis Wilkie Beasley, a 77-year-old man, for the 1995 hammer killing of Carolyn Monfort.
