Family Sues Charlotte Over Fatal Light Rail Stabbing

The family of Iryna Zarutska, a Ukrainian refugee fatally stabbed on a Charlotte light rail train, has filed a lawsuit against the city and its transit security provider. The suit, lodged in Mecklenburg County Superior Court, contends that Zarutska's death was preventable and that city officials and the security company failed to implement adequate safety measures despite awareness of escalating violent crime on and around the transit system.

The legal action comes one year after Zarutska's death, with her relatives alleging negligence on the part of Charlotte and the security firm responsible for the Charlotte Area Transit System. The lawsuit aims to hold the defendants accountable for the perceived lack of protection that contributed to the fatal incident.
