Ratko Mladić, the former Bosnian Serb general notorious as the "Butcher of Bosnia" for his role in orchestrating the Srebrenica genocide and widespread ethnic cleansing during the Bosnian War, has died in prison. Mladić, aged 84, was serving a life sentence for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity at the time of his death in The Hague.
His conviction in 2017 followed a lengthy trial for atrocities committed during the 1992-1995 conflict, which resulted in an estimated 100,000 deaths. The Srebrenica massacre, in which at least 8,000 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were systematically killed, remains the worst atrocity in Europe since World War II. Despite his conviction, some victims' groups have expressed concern that his ideology may persist, even as his death marks the end of a dark chapter in Balkan history.
