MLS Teams to Return to U.S. Open Cup in 2027; New Soccer District Planned for New Jersey

Major League Soccer has announced a significant shift in its participation in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, confirming that all 27 United States-based clubs will compete in the 2027 tournament. This marks a full return after several years of limited involvement, with the competition aiming for a 96-team field and expanded rosters. The final will also be moved to December to alleviate schedule congestion.

In parallel, New Jersey is set to become home to a new professional soccer presence. New York City FC's minor league club will relocate to Middlesex County, forming part of a larger $350 million sports district. This development will bring MLS NEXT Pro soccer and youth development programs to the area, signaling further investment and expansion within the sport in the region.
