MLS Teams to Return to U.S. Open Cup in 2027 with Expanded Format

Major League Soccer has announced a significant shift in its participation in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, confirming that all 27 of its United States-based clubs will compete in the 2027 tournament. This marks a full return for MLS teams after a period of limited involvement, with the last time all MLS clubs participated being in 2024.

The revamped competition will feature a 96-team field, an increase in matchday rosters to 20 players, and a substantial $1 million prize pool. To address scheduling concerns, the final match has been moved to December, aiming to ease congestion during the regular season.
