Europe Grapples with Record-Breaking Heatwave and Wildfires

Europe is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, leading to widespread drought and an increase in wildfires across the continent. The extreme temperatures have strained infrastructure, caused significant damage to landscapes, and resulted in casualties and evacuations. In France, nearly 500 individuals have been arrested on suspicion of starting wildfires since the summer began, with over 180 of them being minors. Meanwhile, Croatia has been particularly hard-hit, with a fire in a holiday resort claiming one life, injuring 40 people, and forcing the evacuation of 1,200 residents. The European Union has issued warnings about "very extreme" wildfire conditions in various regions.

The heatwave's impact extends beyond wildfires, affecting critical infrastructure like railways. The UK's National Rail has acknowledged "exceptional challenges" after two train derailments occurred within 24 hours due to the extreme heat. Belgium and neighboring countries experienced a lethal lack of readiness during an earlier June heatwave, a risk that remains as another wave hits the continent. The prolonged dry spell has also led to critically low rainfall levels in countries like England, which has received only 6% of its average August rainfall, following the driest July on record.
