Europe is currently enduring a severe and prolonged heatwave, which has ignited devastating wildfires across the continent. Countries including France, Croatia, Germany, Greece, and Spain are actively battling intense blazes. These fires have resulted in significant evacuations, numerous injuries, and tragic fatalities. In Croatia, a wildfire swept through a holiday resort, destroying homes, claiming one life, injuring 40 people, and necessitating the evacuation of 1,200 residents. French authorities have reported nearly 500 arrests on suspicion of arson since the beginning of the summer.
The extreme heat is placing immense strain on essential infrastructure and public services. In the United Kingdom, hospitals have recorded internal temperatures approaching 42°C, adversely affecting patient care and leading to the postponement of surgeries. Cooling units in operating theaters have malfunctioned, and ambulance services are struggling to maintain the required temperatures for vital medications. The railway system has also experienced "exceptional challenges," with two train derailments occurring within a 24-hour period attributed to the heat. Even nations not typically accustomed to such extreme temperatures, like Belgium, have had their "lethal lack of readiness" exposed by a heatwave in June, serving as a stark warning to the rest of Europe as another wave of intense heat descends.
