Australian authorities are investigating the background of a flydubai co-pilot who allegedly attacked the captain on a flight bound for Tel Aviv. The co-pilot, who reportedly spent time in Australia between 2015 and 2017 as a student at RMIT University, left before completing his engineering course. Security agencies are examining his activities and connections during his time in the country.
Disaster was narrowly averted on September 30 when passengers and crew intervened to stop the alleged hijacking attempt. The flight, carrying 182 people, experienced a rapid and significant altitude drop of over 16,000 feet in just over 30 seconds during the incident. Omani officials are also scrutinizing the co-pilot due to his alleged embrace of extreme Islamist views.
