YouTube Pushes Back Against Broadcaster Prominence, Unveils Creator Funding

YouTube's Vice President for EMEA, Pedro Pina, has strongly argued against mandating "forced prominence" for British broadcasters on digital platforms, stating it would negatively impact the content ecosystem and push creators further down. Pina made these remarks during the Edinburgh TV Festival, where he also announced a $4 million pledge to support British creators.

Pina asserted that YouTube is not a "villain" to the traditional television industry but rather a vital engine for talent, audience engagement, and revenue. He highlighted the platform's role in fostering a "golden age" for British content and emphasized its commitment to creator monetization, evidenced by initiatives like direct music sales on SoundCloud and Flipboard's acquisition of a creator monetization startup. Meanwhile, other platforms are also exploring new monetization avenues, with Apple Maps introducing ads and Xbox offering a disc-to-digital conversion program for games.
