European Leagues Demand FIFA Governance Overhaul Amid Infantino's Re-election Bid

Four of Europe's top football leagues have issued a strong call for fundamental reforms within FIFA, declaring the organization's current governance "not fit for purpose." This demand for change comes as FIFA President Gianni Infantino faces mounting criticism and prepares to seek a fourth term in office in March 2027. The leagues, including the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, and the Bundesliga, are specifically targeting Infantino's proposed plan for private investment in a commercial vehicle to manage FIFA tournaments, known as FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which emerged in late July.

Their joint statement signifies a significant escalation in pressure on Infantino, suggesting that his offer of an external governance review is insufficient. This move by the major European leagues highlights growing discontent with FIFA's direction and operational structure, particularly following the controversial "World Cup sell-off debacle." The leagues are advocating for greater input and are critical of what they perceive as FIFA's "expansionism," indicating a desire for a more collaborative and transparent approach to the sport's global administration.
