Toilet Flushes Disperse Pathogen Plumes, Study Warns

New research indicates that flushing a toilet can create a significant aerosol plume, releasing potentially infectious particles into the air. These particles can remain suspended in the breathing zone of individuals for at least 20 seconds after a flush.

The study highlights that even closing the toilet lid may not be sufficient to contain these airborne pathogens. The findings suggest that toilet-generated aerosols could contribute to the transmission of various illnesses, including Legionella, influenza, and norovirus.
