North Carolina Teen Dies From Rare Brain-Eating Amoeba Infection

A teenager in North Carolina has succumbed to a rare and typically fatal infection caused by the brain-eating amoeba, Naegleria fowleri. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) confirmed the death on Monday, August 31, 2026.

Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba commonly found in warm freshwater environments. Infection occurs when the amoeba enters the body through the nose, subsequently traveling to the brain and causing severe damage. The NCDHHS extended condolences to the family and community affected by this tragic loss.
