Music Giants Sue AI Firm Anthropic for Widespread Copyright Infringement

Sony Music Entertainment and Warner Chappell Music have initiated a significant lawsuit against AI company Anthropic, alleging extensive copyright infringement. The music labels accuse Anthropic of "brazenly" using tens of thousands of copyrighted musical works without authorization to train its artificial intelligence models.

The legal action, filed in a California federal court, characterizes Anthropic's actions as a "campaign of intellectual property theft." The plaintiffs are seeking substantial financial penalties, including up to $150,000 for each infringed work and an additional $25,000 for each instance of alleged removal of copyright management information. This lawsuit underscores the escalating legal battles over the use of copyrighted content in the development of AI technologies.
