Microsoft Streamlines Copilot, Retires Mico Character and Merges Apps

Microsoft is consolidating its consumer and business Copilot AI assistants into a single unified app, marking a significant shift in its AI strategy. The company announced it will merge the separate Copilot and Microsoft 365 Copilot applications into one "super app" interface, which will retain the "Microsoft Copilot" name but feature an updated icon. This move aims to simplify the user experience by bringing both personal and work accounts into a single platform, as reported by The Verge and TechCrunch.

As part of this consolidation, Microsoft is also retiring several features that failed to gain traction, including AI-generated podcasts, Group Chats, and Deep Research. Additionally, the emotive yellow blob character, Mico, which served as the face of Copilot's voice mode, will no longer appear in the chatbot's voice interactions. Instead, Mico will be relocated to Microsoft's Learn Live platform, where the company says the avatar will have "more to react to," according to The Verge. The changes reflect Microsoft's effort to streamline its AI offerings and focus on more successful features.
