US Bans Canadian Goods as Trade War Escalates with Retaliatory Tariffs

The United States has announced a ban on imports of Canadian dairy products, most alcoholic beverages, and motorcycles, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing trade war between the two nations. This move comes into effect in three weeks and directly follows Canada's implementation of retaliatory tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of U.S. goods.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated that the retaliatory measures were unavoidable and aimed at countering what he described as the U.S. seeking "dependency, not a true economic partnership." The Canadian tariffs, some reaching up to 50%, target a wide range of U.S. products, from steel to apparel. This tit-for-tat exchange is prompting businesses, such as Japanese brewer Sapporo, to reconsider their production locations, with plans to shift some operations from Canada to the U.S. to mitigate the impact of the tariffs.
