US Sanctions ICC President and Prosecutor Over Gaza War Crimes Probe

The United States has imposed sanctions on the president of the International Criminal Court (ICC) and a prosecutor investigating alleged war crimes by Israel in Gaza. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced the sanctions, denouncing the ICC as a "corrupt and fatally politicized supranational court" that has "maliciously abused its authority."

This action escalates the U.S. effort to counter the ICC's investigations, particularly those involving U.S. allies. The sanctions target ICC President Tomoko Akane and prosecutor Abdoulaye Seye, who was leading the inquiry into actions during the war in Gaza. The U.S. has consistently opposed the ICC's jurisdiction over non-member states and has vowed to protect its citizens and allies from what it considers politically motivated prosecutions.
