Olympic Games Face Modernization Crisis Ahead of Brisbane 2032

Australia's most senior sport executive, Kieren Perkins, has issued a stark warning regarding the future of the Olympic Games, urging the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to modernize the sporting program for the Brisbane 2032 Games. Perkins argues that several traditional Olympic sports "have no modern relevance whatsoever," potentially jeopardizing the Games' appeal and sustainability.

This call for reform comes as the IOC aims to curb the expansion of sports at the Olympics. While Sydney 2000 featured 28 sports, the Los Angeles 2028 Games are slated to include 36, many with multiple disciplines requiring extensive venue infrastructure. The IOC's stance suggests an openness to incorporating sports like cricket and netball, which have broader global appeal and could help revitalize the Olympic program.
