Land Speed Record Archive Reveals Fearless Era of Record Breakers

An extraordinary archive spanning more than a century of land speed record-breaking machines and their drivers has been made public, offering unseen material that provides insight into how death-defying attempts captured the public imagination. The release coincides with a new hydrogen-powered land speed record set by a British team at the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, where JCB's Hydromax car reached 406.320 mph, driven by Andy Green, the former RAF wing commander who holds the current outright land speed record of 763.035 mph set in 1997 in ThrustSSC.
