More than a dozen former University of Michigan hockey players have filed a lawsuit against the university, alleging they were subjected to severe sexualized hazing decades ago. The lawsuit claims that coaches and university staff were aware of the abuse, which reportedly included forced shaving of genitals and other sadistic acts by teammates.
Attorneys for the former players described the alleged abuse as "ritualized, meticulously planned and sadistic," stating that enduring such sexual abuse was a requirement for being a member of the team. The legal action highlights serious concerns about the culture within the program and the university's alleged failure to intervene.
