Target Pulls 'Offensive' Clown Costume After Racist Caricature Backlash

Target has removed a children's Halloween costume from its shelves following widespread criticism on social media. The costume, described as a "Kids' Glows Under Blacklight Circus Clown Halloween Costume," was deemed by many to resemble racist caricatures historically used in minstrel shows.

The controversy centered on an image of a Black child wearing the costume, which featured a bright orange and black outfit, black gloves, and a mask with a wide, toothy smile. Critics pointed out that the child's pose and the costume's elements evoked offensive stereotypes of Black individuals, prompting the retailer to issue an apology and withdraw the product.
