Falcons Name Tua Tagovailoa Starting Quarterback for Week 1

The Atlanta Falcons have officially named Tua Tagovailoa as their starting quarterback for Week 1 of the upcoming season, marking a significant decision in their quarterback competition. Tagovailoa will lead the team against the Pittsburgh Steelers, becoming the Falcons' sixth different Week 1 starter in as many years.

This announcement concludes a monthslong competition between Tagovailoa and Michael Penix Jr. Tagovailoa ultimately earned the starting role after outperforming Penix in valuable practice reps throughout training camp. Penix Jr. had previously started nine games for the Falcons in 2025 before his season was cut short by a torn ACL in November.
