Aria Bans AI-Generated Music From Australian Charts

The Australian Recording Industry Association (Aria) has announced a significant update to its codes of practice, barring wholly AI-generated tracks from eligibility for its music charts. This new policy, effective from August 31, 2026, aims to preserve the human element of artistry in the music industry while acknowledging the evolving role of technology.

While fully AI-created songs will be excluded, recordings that utilize generative AI in a supporting capacity will still be eligible, provided they are deemed "substantially human-made" and do not raise concerns about chart manipulation. Aria CEO Annabelle Herd emphasized that these changes are designed to provide clear guidelines for artists and the industry in a rapidly developing technological landscape, distinguishing between AI as a tool for artists and music generated entirely by AI services built on existing artist recordings.
