UK Soil Microplastic Contamination Threatens Food Security, MPs Warn

A new report highlights the growing threat of microplastic contamination in UK agricultural soils, raising serious concerns for the nation's food security. Scientists, Members of Parliament, and environmental campaigners are urging the government to implement legally binding targets to reduce microplastic pollution.

The report, published by the all-party parliamentary group (APPG) on microplastics, identifies UK agricultural soils as among the most polluted in Europe. A significant contributor to this contamination is the widespread use of sludge from water treatment works as fertilizer, which repeatedly introduces microplastics into the soil ecosystem. This accumulation poses a risk to the health of the soil, a vital component of food production.
