Catalan Cinema Surges with Increased Funding and International Oscar Ambitions

Catalan cinema is experiencing a significant upswing, fueled by a substantial increase in government funding and a new generation of ambitious filmmakers. Annual general cinema funding for the region has more than doubled between 2019 and the present, rising from €12.5 million to €30.2 million. This investment is enabling larger-scale productions and a broader range of genre exploration within arthouse filmmaking.

This burgeoning creative output is also gaining international recognition, with Spain submitting "The Age of Goodbyes," a film exploring Malaysia's buried past, to the Toronto Film Festival. Furthermore, the country is actively participating in the international Oscar race, with numerous nations, including Spain, Indonesia, Hungary, Nepal, and Israel, submitting their entries for the international feature film category. The campaigns are intensifying as the deadline for submissions approaches, with shortlists to be announced in December.
