Virgin Trains Secures UK Track Access for European Services, Challenging Eurostar

Virgin Trains has taken a significant step towards launching passenger services to continental Europe, securing track access from the UK's rail regulator. The company, led by Richard Branson, has been granted permission to operate up to 20 daily return trains from London to Paris, Brussels, and Amsterdam, potentially commencing in 2030.

This development marks a direct challenge to Eurostar's long-standing monopoly on cross-Channel high-speed rail travel. The approval from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) allows Virgin Trains to utilize the High Speed 1 line, which connects London St Pancras International to the Channel Tunnel, paving the way for increased competition on these popular international routes.
