Higher Education Regulator Apologizes for Overturned £585,000 Free Speech Fine

England's higher education regulator, the Office for Students (OfS), has issued an apology following a series of errors that led to a record £585,000 fine being imposed on the University of Sussex. The fine, levied last year, was based on claims that the university breached free speech regulations concerning its former professor Kathleen Stock.

However, the University of Sussex initiated a judicial review, which ultimately found the OfS had acted with bias and "closed its mind" to evidence. Consequently, the High Court overturned the fine in April, leading to the regulator's public apology for its missteps in the decision-making process.
