ICE Detains International Athlete; NCAA Faces Scrutiny Over Support

The detention of Kentucky State University basketball player Aminata Seck by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has highlighted the precarious situation faced by international student-athletes. Seck, a Senegalese senior who earned all-conference honors and an academic award, was apprehended at Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport on August 7th. Her lawyer stated the detention stemmed from a missed student visa deadline due to back surgery, describing it as a "paperwork situation."

Since her apprehension, Seck has been moved through multiple ICE facilities. Reports indicate she has suffered from an ACL injury while detained and has not received adequate medical care beyond ibuprofen. This incident raises significant questions for the NCAA and universities regarding the support systems in place for international athletes, particularly when immigration issues arise, contrasting with the eagerness with which these athletes are recruited.
