NYC Mayor Bans AI for Most Students, Citing Need for Human Connection

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has implemented a one-year moratorium on student use of artificial intelligence in public elementary and middle schools, marking the most restrictive policy of its kind in the United States. The decision aims to prioritize human interaction and the development of essential skills through traditional learning methods.

Mamdani emphasized the importance of teachers and peer interaction for student growth, stating that children need to build relationships and grapple with challenges independently. While the ban affects approximately 600,000 students up to eighth grade, high school students will still have limited access to AI tools, and teachers are permitted to use AI for administrative and lesson-planning purposes. This move by the nation's largest school district comes as other educational bodies, including Los Angeles Unified School District, are reviewing their own AI policies.
