US, Russia Undermine AI Weapons Treaty by Removing Human Oversight Provisions

Negotiations for a global treaty on lethal autonomous weapons, intended to regulate the use of killer artificial intelligence arms, were significantly altered by U.S. and Russian diplomats. In a late-stage push, the two nations reportedly removed key provisions designed to safeguard the deployment of AI in weaponry.

According to sources familiar with the closed-door proceedings, language requiring AI systems to operate in a "predictable" and "reliable" manner was stripped from the document. Additionally, a clause mandating the consideration of ethical implications and a provision requiring human review of AI-generated military targets before strikes were also removed. These changes occurred during a session where U.N. cameras were off and civil society observers were excluded, raising concerns about transparency and the future regulation of AI in warfare.
