UK Grapples with Severe Drought and Extreme Heat

The United Kingdom is experiencing its driest July on record, with England receiving only 10% of its average rainfall for the month. This prolonged dry spell, coupled with a severe heatwave, has led to a cascade of environmental and infrastructural challenges across the country. The lack of rain has resulted in parched landscapes, impacting sporting venues and agricultural land, while also increasing the risk of wildfires.

The extreme weather conditions have also placed significant strain on public services and infrastructure. Network Rail has cited "exceptional challenges" due to the heat, with two train derailments occurring within a 24-hour period, one of which resulted in serious injuries. In response to the heightened wildfire risk, a temporary ban on disposable barbecues has been implemented. Meanwhile, Thames Water is preparing to restart its desalination plant, though it is not expected to be operational until winter, long after the current drought is anticipated to end.
